Earthquake Strikes Area on Easter Sunday

April 5, 2010

A 7.2 earthquake struck Mexico’s Baja California peninsula Easter Sunday, with seismic activity felt as far away as Camarillo, Malibu, Oxnard and Ventura.

The earthquake resulted in the death of at least two people, including a Mexicali man fatally struck by falling debris inside his collapsing home and a man who panicked during the vent and ran into the street and was struck by a car.

The main event struck around 3:40 p.m. Sunday, and a 3.0 temblor hit off the coast of Malibu about 15 minutes later. Foreshocks began last Wednesday with magnitudes of 3 and 4.

There were no damages or injury in Ventura County, although the elevators at Crowne Plaza Hotel on the beachfront in Ventura stopped working due to their sensitivity to the shaking.

Authorities said that residents in Camarillo, Malibu, Oxnard and Ventura reported feeling the quake, which many compared to feeling like a roller coaster ride.
